We offer in-ground outdoor shelters for clients who live in
Mobile homes or do not have a garage
Our in-ground units, featuring Torshel’s latest technology, have a 13” x 13” bullet-resistant 1.5” polycarbonate window. This window allows natural light to brighten the shelter and provides a wide-angle view of the outside, enhancing safety and security.
Our shelters come with a deadbolt lock on the hatch (door), which you can open and close using a key. Importantly, you cannot lock a person inside the unit, as there is a knob that opens and closes the lock from the inside. Moreover, you can remove this deadbolt lock and install your preferred locking mechanism, giving you complete control over your shelter’s security.
Finally, these units come with one pop-up hatch supported by a gas cylinder: the hatch lifts instead of sliding like the garage version.
Torshel storm-safe shelters have been tested and approved by Texas Tech University. All our shelters meet and exceed all of FEMA’s Guidelines.
These shelters are designed for easy installation, requiring no cutting and a fast process. However, they need 5-7 cubic yards of 3,000 PSI concrete reinforced with HELIX rebar to keep the unit securely in the ground and prevent it from floating, ensuring a stable and reliable shelter.
Before the installation (before digging), you must call 811. We need to ensure that there are no utilities in the area where the shelter will be installed. This service is offered at no cost.
Our shelters are designed for your comfort and convenience. All Shelters come with carpet floors, stairs, and benches. A handrail is also included at no cost, providing a comfortable and secure step into the unit.
Rest assured, these units are installed in one day on average, minimizing disruption and ensuring your safety in no time.
New features
Hybrid shelter
Since the beginning of 2022, Torshel has been installing these shelters with an optional 6′ x 8′ x 6″ thick extended slab. This adaptable design allows the client to install later a 4×6 in-ground storm shelter, a small shed, or an outdoor coffee table, ensuring their needs are met.
In addition, some clients opt for an in-ground unit but later decide to include an above-ground shelter for their neighbors, the elderly, or someone who has claustrophobia or finds it hard to use the in-ground version. This inclusive approach ensures everyone’s safety and comfort.
Carport concrete slab & storm shelter
For an additional fee, we can make a two-in-one investment. While we install your shelter, we can extend the concrete slab to 10’ x 20’ x 4”, so you can use the remaining space for a bigger shed, carport, or whatever you want. The shelter will be installed in a corner of the concrete slab.
Renders
If you send us high-quality pictures of the job site, our Product Development technicians will prepare renders so you can see what the final product will look like.
Corrosion protection
Shield of protection
Our steel in-ground storm shelters are leak-proof and seal-welded inside and out. The exterior contains coal tar epoxy, which prevents corrosion for many years. The epoxy is also used in underground pipelines and marinas. The interior is also primed and painted.
Walls of concrete
Torshel uses a unique technique to install the unit with 4” of concrete underneath the floor, the four walls, and the ceiling; the entire shelter will be caged with concrete.
Look at the installation file for details.
Ventilation
Our units’ built-in ventilation consists of L-shaped inverted air intakes, which provide plenty of air for the occupants, plus battery-powered fans (provided) will add plenty of airflow.
Finally, these units come with a secure pop-up hatch supported by a gas cylinder: the hatch lifts instead of sliding like the garage version, ensuring your safety and confidence in your emergency preparedness.
By using your cellphone to find the GPS coordinates of your shelter, you can then register with the local police and first responder agencies. This step is crucial as it enables them to locate you quickly if devastation occurs in your area.
All the doors/hatches on the in-ground outdoor shelters are 27” W x 36” L openings located 12” H above the ground level, preventing water from coming in during rains.
For DIY projects and clients living far from us, we can ship the unit to them or a local contractor who can install the shelter following our guidelines.
