OUTDOOR TORNADO SHELTERS

Please read before you buy

We offer under-ground outdoor shelters for clients who live in mobile homes or do not have a garage.

New Features!

First Feature -Hybrid Shelter

Since the onset of 2022, Torshel has been installing these shelters with an optional 6′ x 8′ x 6″ thick extended slab. This way, the client can install a 4×6 above-ground safe room, a small shed, or an outdoor coffee table later on. In addition, some clients buy an in-ground unit but later decide to include an above-ground shelter for their neighbors, the elderly, or someone who has claustrophobia or finds it hard to use the inground version.

Second Feature -Carport Concrete Slab and Storm Shelter

For an additional fee, we can make a two-in-one investment. While we install your shelter, we can extend the concrete slab to a 10’ x 20’ x 4”, so you can use the remaining space of concrete slab for a bigger shed, carport, or whatever you want. The shelter will be installed in a corner, enclosed with the entire concrete slab.

Third Feature -Renders

Send us some good-quality pictures of the job site, and our Product Development teammates will prepare some renders so you can have a clear idea of what the final product will look like.

Our underground units reflect Torshel’s latest technology. They come with a 13” x 13” bullet-resistant window of 1.5” polycarbonate. The window allows natural light to flow inside the shelter and offers you a wide-angled view of the outside.

In addition, our shelters come with a deadbolt lock on the hatch (door), which you can open and close by using a key. However, you cannot lock a person in because inside the unit; there is a knob that opens and closes the lock. You can remove this deadbolt lock and install your own locking mechanism if you wish. Finally, these units come with one pop-up hatch supported by a gas cylinder: the hatch lifts instead of sliding like the garage version.

These shelters are easier to install; there is nothing to cut, and the process is faster. However, they do require 5-7 cubic yards of 3,000 PSI concrete reinforced with HELIX rebar to keep the unit inside the ground and prevent it from floating out of the ground.

Corrosion Protection

First -Shield of Protection

All of our steel underground storm shelters are leak-proof, seal-welded, inside, and out. The exterior contains coal tar epoxy that prevents corrosion for many years. The epoxy is used in underground pipelines and marinas to prevent corrosion. The interior is also primed and painted.

Second -Walls of Concrete

Torshel uses a unique technique to install the unit with 4” of concrete underneath the floor, the four walls, and the ceiling; the entire shelter will be caged with concrete. Look at the installation file for details.

Ventilation

Our units’ built-in ventilation consists of L-shaped inverted air intakes, which provide plenty of air for the occupants, plus battery-powered fans (provided) will add plenty of airflow.

By utilizing your cellphone, you can find the GPS coordinates of your shelter so you can register with the local police and first responder agencies. They will come and look for you if devastation occurs in your area.

Before the installation (before digging), you must call 811. We need to ensure no utilities in the area where the shelter will be installed. This service is offered at no cost.

Torshel storm safe shelters have been tested and approved by Texas Tech University. All of our shelters meet and exceed all of FEMA’s Guidelines.

All Shelters come with carpet floors, stairs, and benches. A handrail is also included at no cost.

These units are installed in one day on average.

Will I Get Trapped Inside?

Torshel’s outdoor shelters come with one door EZ lifting; it has a gas cylinder that helps open and closes the hatch. All our underground outdoor shelters come with a 3-ton long arm hydraulic jack which you can use to lift any debris, car, or tree blocking the door. Torshel recommends the placement of whistles inside the units as part of your basic disaster preparedness.

Door Dimensions

All the doors on the inground outdoor shelters are 27” W x 36” L openings and are located 12” H above the ground level, preventing water from coming in during rains.

Can You Ship Me the Shelter?

For DIY projects and or clients that live far from us, we can ship the unit to them or to a local contractor who can install the shelter following our guidelines.
